Come on in, wipe your shoes and let me take your coats. What's that you say? You don't have a coat? You are lucky you are inside then huh?
In class I know that it is hard to pay attention 100% of the time. I also know that it is far more appealing and cool to eat lunch with your friends and not with the teacher during extra help. *sniff* *sniff*
So, here are some quick notes that you can review/copy just incase you were distracted by the person next to you who was passing notes, picking their nose or something.
Ecosystems and food chains
An ecosystem consists of living organisms functioning together with nonliving things
A healthy ecosystem is balanced.
A food chain is made up of producers, consumers, and decomposers.

A food chain is made up of producers, consumers, and decomposers.
A food chain starts with a producer, then has at least one consumer and ends with a decomposer.
Most food chains do not have more than 5 links because there is not enough energy to support that many links.
The sun provides energy for the food chain.
Green plants are called "producers" because they use the energy from the sun to produce their own food (through photosynthesis). (flowers, vegetables, herbs, vines, weeds)
There are three types of consumers.
Consumers who eat only producers and are called herbivores. (rabbits)
Consumers who eat other consumers are called carnivores. (lions)
Consumers who eat other consumers and producers are called omnivores. (people)
Decomposers are a valuable reasource to our environment because they break down dead animals and wastes and put nutrients back into the soil. (earth worms, termite maggots, bacteria)
In this food chain: algae>fish>heron, the arrows point to the animal that gains the energy. So the energy from the algae moves to the fish and when the fish are eaten by the heron, the energy moves again from the fish to the heron.
If you took away the heron from the above food chain, the result would be that the fish population would grow at first. Then the fish would eat all the food and they would eventually starve to death.
A food web is a model that shows how the food chains in an ecosystem are connected.

A food pyramid shows how much energy is available at each level. As you go up levels, you lose energy because it is used, lost or wasted.
After reviewing these questions, please answer #1-5 on page A121 of your textbook. This assignment is due Friday, December 14. Feel free to post any problems, comments, etc.
